This has come as a surprise to us because Discord, from our point of view, has always appeared to have all the necessary features ready and waiting to go. But for some strange reason, the ability to export chats is not a thing. But worry not because there are a few workarounds we can take advantage of so that users can export their chat messages.

Use copy and paste to export Discord chat messages

One way we believe users can easily export messages in a Discord chat is to use the copy and paste function. It is not ideal, but it does work and all you’ll need is a text program such as Word, Notepad, or even OneNote to store the copied content.

1] Copy the messages in the chat

Open the Discord app, whether it be the desktop or web versions.Navigate to the relevant chat and select it.Use your mouse to highlight all messages as you scroll.Press CTRL + C to copy all selected messages in the chat.

2] Paste messages to a text program.

Paste the copied content into your preferred document software.Save the document to complete the task.

You should now have effectively exported your chat messages from Discord. If anything happens, you will always have these memories.

Use DiscordChatExporter to export Discord messages

Another way to export Discord messages is to use a tool known as DiscordChatExporter. This program does the job automatically, but there are a few hoops you’ll have to go through first.

1] Get your user Token

Before we can begin, you must find and copy your Discord user token. This information is not readily available from within Discord, therefore, we have to take a few steps.

2] Go to Discord on the web

Open your Discord account using Discord on the web.

3] Copy your token

After the page has loaded, press CTRL + SHIFT + I.From there, press CTRL + SHIFT + M to enable the device toolbar.Click on the Application tab.Look for Local Storage and expand it.Select https꞉//discord.com via the dropdown. From the Filter box, type Token.Copy the token key.

The token is very important so keep it in a safe space for now because we’re going to need it very soon.

Download DiscordChatExporter

First, we must download the DiscordChatExporter app for Windows from github.com. This app is not available for Linux or Mac users, at least not at the time of writing.Extract the folder from within the .zip file.Double-click on the installation file to install the app on your computer.Once the file is installed, it will open automatically.

Copy your token and paste it into the Token box.Hit the Enter key.You will now see all the chats you can export.

Select one or multiple then click the download button to export.

That’s it, all chat-related messages on Discord are now downloaded and available on your computer in one easy swoop. Read: Discord Stream Stuck on loading or Not loading

Can you export Discord chat?

Yes, you can. Folks can either do it manually by copying every message in a chat, then pasting the content to a document editor, or use DiscordChatExporter.

Does Discord delete old messages?

From our understanding, Discord does not support the deletion of all messages natively. However, users can find a bot designed for this job. Some bots can delete messages in bulk, clone a channel, or delete all messages at once without leaving a trace.

Does Discord save deleted messages?

No, the platform does not do such a thing. Once a message is deleted, there is no official way to retrieve it. In fact, if Discord chooses to store deleted messages, then the company would effectively be breaking the law.
